Purpose of the Position
Together with the second Customs Import/Export Manager, this position oversees the operational customs clearance for all import and export shipments, as well as other customs-related operational aspects. The Customs Import/Export Manager Germany will act as a backup in the absence of the second Customs Import/Export Manager Germany, and vice versa.
The Customs Import/Export Manager is responsible for leading and monitoring all customs-related activities within the organization and for all our customers. Both roles must ensure compliance with international trade regulations, optimize customs processes, and reduce costs related to duties and import taxes. The manager develops and implements customs strategies, oversees the approval process for customs activities, and applies for and maintains customs authorizations and Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) status.
Additionally, this role involves training and supporting the customs team, collaborating with authorities, internal and external partners, and customers.
Key Responsibilities
Managing and overseeing all import and export activities to ensure compliance with international and internal regulations.
Executing operational customs declarations based on business and customer requirements.
Developing and implementing strategies to optimize customs processes and reduce costs.
Implementing and managing a compliant and robust customs authorization process to legitimize customs representation for customers.
Handling documentation and communication with customs authorities and relevant stakeholders.
Collaborating with internal departments, external partners, and customers to ensure smooth customs procedures.
Managing approvals for customs-related activities, such as bonded warehouses, temporary storage, deferment accounts, and others.
Applying for and maintaining AEO status.
Monitoring compliance with trade agreements and international regulations.
Building and maintaining relationships with customs authorities and relevant agencies.
Training and supporting the customs team to enhance their expertise and efficiency.
Analyzing and reporting on the customs department’s performance to the Director EMEA Customs and senior management.
Leading and conducting potential customs audits.
Qualifications
Willingness to work shifts, including weekends, based on customs clearance requirements.
Bachelor’s degree in Law, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field.
At least 6 years of experience in customs and international trade, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
In-depth knowledge of international customs regulations and procedures.
Strong leadership and communication skills.
Experience in developing and implementing customs strategies.
Fluent in German and English.
Ability to analyze complex problems and develop effective solutions.
Experience with customs software and systems (Cargowise & Scope).
Experience with import/export/transit customs declarations for air and ground transport.
Experience in customs clearance for BTM/AMG/veterinary-regulated products.
Experience handling customs authorizations and approvals from customs authorities.
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to set priorities.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Proficiency in Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
